To think that I’ve been here for a whole year now! It felt like just yesterday I was making my first post. To celebrate my 1 year anniversary, I wanted to do something special, I wanted to review something that you’ve might’ve been waiting for. Back when I hit 1000 followers, I made a poll on what anime I should watch. One of the options was Boku no Pico and of course; that got the most votes. So to pay homage to that poll, I decided that I would review this gem of an anime; Boku no Pico.
Story
Summary
So without spoiling too much; the story revolves around a young boy named Pico as he goes on three epic adventures of self-discovery and exploration.
Thoughts
I thought that the plot of Boku no Pico had a pretty solid middle and end, but found it lacking in the beginning a little bit. I know the first episode is just there to introduce the characters and their personalities, but it doesn’t really tie in nicely with the second and third episodes. The second episode is also there to introduce more characters, but it also builds up for what’s to come in the last episode. Speaking of which, the last episode is my favorite due to its character development, plot twist, and conclusion. Pico’s final words at the end left me hopeful for a continuation in a season 2. Which I hope there is because there were a lot of unanswered questions and unexplored areas.
Animation
The animation is pretty decent for the most part. The character designs are nice to look at and their facial expressions match the situations they’re in. It really brings the characters to life. Another thing worth mentioning is the censorship. I usually hate censorship in just about anything, but I’m gonna make an exception here because I think it’s used very well. It leaves a little to the imagination. Though I do have some problems with the animation. The backgrounds are very plain and boring. The special effects are also lacking! It’s unrealistic and bizarre. Aside from those two points, the animation is subpar.
Characters
The characters are all likable and well-developed. The relationships between all the characters were really something. I’d like to take a little time to talk about my main squeeze:
Pico
You really get a good understanding of what Pico is like on the outside and definitely on the inside. There is a lot of depth to his character, and he is such a trap. Pico is not a selfish lover; he’ll do whatever it takes to make his partners happy. I gotta respect that.
Chico was just as good of a character as Pico was, but I can’t say the same for Coco and Mokkun. They’re fun to see in action, but I felt like they were underdeveloped because they were only shown in one episode. A shame really… I would’ve liked to see more of them, especially Mokkun.
Because his relationship with Pico was so strong, I would’ve loved to see what his relationship was like with the other boys. But I guess we’ll never find out…
Soundtrack
Now this is where we get into negatives. The soundtrack for Boku no Pico is very forgettable and I’d go as far as to say it’s bad. It didn’t complement the scenes it was played in and the openings and endings were awful. Though maybe I could let it slide because the soundtrack doesn’t really matter in a show like this.
Final Thoughts and Verdict
Boku no Pico is a classic in the making. Going into this, I wanted to see a story of self-discovery and exploration, and I got exactly that and more! It may have its fair share of problems, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives. To anyone who hasn’t seen Boku no Pico yet, I highly suggest that you do. You won’t regret it!
My score for Boku no Pico is a 69/10.
